Hello world! SBSH Blog Goes Live!

By Amit Regev, SBSH Software  |  September 9th, 2010  |  View Comments

SBSH Blog Goes Live!Over the past few months we’ve implement new design changes to our web-site and forums to help more users locate our announcements posted in our forums more easily. Such announcement posts include new application updates, new releases and so forth – basically all posts that are relevant to a large group of our users.

After running with our new site changes for a few months, we’ve seen a great increase in users who never knew they can enjoy free updates for our apps even after they register the application – users that are very happy to find more details about new updates we release and new features they can enjoy for their registered apps! However, many users are still finding the forums system somewhat complex for navigation and finding those release posts isn’t straightforward as it should be. This led us to the decision that it’s time to introduce a new interface that will be dedicated only for company and application announcements (both new releases and application updates).

This is where our new SBSH Blog enters! :)

As of today, SBSH Blog will be a one place stop for all new application release, minor updates and general company updates!

On the right we’ve placed several tools that will help you focus your reading only on the apps you are interested in – including the Categories list that you can use to read only on specific apps/platforms, and the search box. The categories box will include new categories as we start posting new releases here during the upcoming weeks.

Our new SBSH Blog doesn’t mean we’re closing our forums, not at all – we are defining more accurate roles that will help users find the information they want more easily. Looking for latest releases information and company updates – visit our Blog. Want to post a bug report, technical question or just chat with other SBSH users about new feature ideas – the forums is the place for such live discussion :)

Our new blog link: http://blog.sbsh.net. Links to the blog are also added as we speak to our main web-site and forums.

Already registered to our forums? You can also login to our blog!

With over 130,000 registered forum members, we really didn’t want to ask all of you guys to re-register at our blog once again. It wasn’t simple, but, if everything goes well, users that are registered to our forums should be able to login to our blog using the same login details right away! :)

If things goes super well, assuming that you have an avatar defined in your forums account – you should also see it along side with your replies at our new blog automatically!! If you don’t have an avatar defined at our forums, the blog tries to pull your gravatar, before falling back to the no-avatar image.

If you get a chance, please post some welcome greeting to this thread so we can check that avatars are indeed working properly.

Guests posting

Another important change you will notice is guests posts – unlike out forums, guests can post at our blog. Since we would like to reach to all of our users with new releases, we decided to allow guest posting – to encourage more users to ask questions and give feedback.

To minimize spam, guest posts require moderator approval, which means it can take a bit until they are shown (until we’ll implement a good automatic moderation engine). Registered members can post without moderation approval. Although guest posting is allowed, we will really appreciate if you could post as a logged in user – this helps make the discussion more personal and fun for all of us! :)

Just getting started

Our blog is still new and many enhancements will be added in the next few weeks. Please forgive any hiccups as we continue to develop and improve our blog, site and forums!

For those with a bit more technical expereince, the blog is powered WordPress – so if you have some ideas for cool WP plug-ins that can be useful for our blog and users I’d love to hear about it! Let me know of any plugins that you think will be useful and I’ll be glad to see if we can add it to our blog too.

Stay Tuned and stop by to say hello

This is pretty much it for our first blog entry at the new SBSH Blog! :)

There are several new releases and announcements that were delayed since we wanted to launch our new blog first. This means you can expect some really exciting announcement to be here over the next couple of days – and of course we invite all of our users to stay tuned!

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts, new ideas for features you would like to see implemented with the blog and any other ideas! If possible, it will be great if you could stop by to say hello at our new blog – so we’ll know our forum members can post at the blog too and about your overall expereince with the new blog.

Have a great day! :-D

I like a LOT but here is how you can make it better:

    1) add a link to it on the main page where it says Useful Links on the right side.

    2) Under the link to it maybe list the last 3-5 updates with direct links to the subjects.

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

Thanks Daniel!! It’s about time we’ll have some nice WordPress engine too – there are also many more mobile apps that sync with it very nicely! :)

As for your suggestions, we will have both of these added along with more ideas that we want to do in the blog itself. Now that the blog is part of the actual site (the forums always felt somewhat disconnected from our site and far away..), we plan to increase the links between blog posts and the actual apps each post is referring too.

For example – say we have a new announcement about SafeWallet for Android (just for example ;]), the blog can identify this as “related-application” and already include the complete application details on the right side of the blog post.

These are things that we couldn’t really do with the forums, but since WordPress engine is really super-flexible (after some initial learning curve), we can really add cool stuff like these that will make things much nicer and easier for all users – and we sure plan on doing so!

However, before we will work on more customization for our site and blog – we have some important releases from now until upcoming Tuesday, so during these days we will probably focus some more on new releases (and some new Android beta testing arriving later on tonight ;) ).

    • djblois

      Thank you very much Amit,

you are correct – I felt it was a little disconnected as well.

  2. wonsanim

    Congratulations Amit and Gang,Well Done!!!!!!!

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

      Thanks wonsanim!!! :)

Based on your reply and avatar I’m guessing that you had no problem to login here using your regular forum login? :]

This project kept us busy for the past few days, and our Android users can expect a surprise in the form of a new beta version later on tonight… beta group discussion will continue at the forums of course.

  3. Omri Baumer, SBSH Software

Congratulations, I hope you all like this new change, I know I do.

  4. Amit Regev, SBSH Software

I just noticed that the twitter re-tweet counter button doesn’t count properly :/ Investigating this some more…

  5. RoyDev

    Looks really great!
I am very excited to read updates on the blog!

    Amazing!!!

  6. yololo

Well, joined to the concert of : Great !!! ;)

    Nice idea and addition…

  7. yololo

Errr… Minor (very minor) problem, i’ve lost my avatar, and there is no choice in my profile to add it…

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

Hmm.. Have you logged in using the same login details that you use at the forums?

The same login details should work here too – and if you use the same login, your avatar should be pulled automatically for you :) (you don’t need to re-register at the blog since you already have an account at our forums).

      Any help?

    • yololo

      My avatar isn’t showing…
I’m trying to reply to me ;) to see if avatar is showing now… And i was logging with my forum account, of course !

    • yololo

I’ve got a red cross (image not loaded) at my work, but my proxy filters some adresses… But…
I see your mug in your avatar ;)
When i right click on the place of my avatar, i’ve got the url http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/04d5687f02fe6c13720014099ddce0d2?s=48&d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D48&r=G
My avatar isn’t with gravatar, but loaded from your forum… So, here is the problem, and i haven’t found the way to change it in my blog’s setting…
      Mystery, another mystery… :-O

    • yololo

Err… Looking at the url of my avatar, this is in SBSH’s forum
      http://www.planete-htc.com/images/avatars/upload/13134.gif?_time=1284735922
       working here !

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

Thanks for the feedback! :) After some more investigation I’ve got it fixed now and your avatar should be showing now ;)

I still have some more optimization to do with the avatar loading – but all avatars should now be loaded properly :)

    • yololo

he he, my mug is here ! Warf ! :)

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

And it’s great to have you back with us! :) Give me a few more days and I’m also going to bring here posts count (trying to combine posts count between the forums and blog together – see how it goes and hopefully it won’t slow things too much..).

Then, need to see how I can create a moderation team over here too – we’re definitely getting there :-D

  8. Beutelbär

    Hi all

Congratulations for your new blog – well done – I like it :)

BTW: I was not able to login with my forum account. The error message was “Account not found” – but I´m sure that I already have one ;) )

    BB

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

I’m checking it right now. Is it OK if I’ll reset your forums account password for testing purposes? (I will email you the new password once I’m done with the testing, so you can change it once again from there).

  9. Beutelbär

    Of course – np

    BB

    • Beutelbär

This is a test reply written by Amit – I’m using your account only for testing purposes… Let’s see if the avatar is showing.

I will shortly log-out and log-in back with my account to explain the cause for this :)

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

OK – I did some more investigation and I’m back with some results :)

Apparently, the login page doesn’t like amulets too much.. This was my first guess when I saw your username. So the first thing I tried was changing your login name from “Beutelbär” to “Beutelbar” (replaced it with a regular ‘a’). Once I did this change, the login worked nicely – and also it was recognized with your forums account right away.

I only changed your login name to Beutelbar, so your display name remained Beutelbär on both of the blog and forums – but notice that now you’ll need to type ‘Beutelbar’ (with a regular ‘a’) when you login.

This at least until I figure out what is causing this situation and get this fixed.

BTW – I’ve also linked your previous replies here above with your real forums account, so you can see the real avatar is now showing :)

BTW2 – I will email you in a second your new temporary password since I had to reset it for the testing.

Please let me know if indeed you were able to login on your side now that I changed your login name and with the new password. I will of course suggest to modify the password after I email you my temporary one.

  10. Beutelbär

    Hi Amit,

OK – now it works. I need some time to find another reason why your blog does not like me ;) – If you need some special characters like $ in your password you always get “incorrect password”.

For now I changed my password and now it works – I´m logged in here with the same user/pw like in the forum. :)

So, it seems to work –

    BB

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

I’m investigating the trouble with special characters and will have this resolved in the next 3 days or so :)

  11. spmwinkel

    Congrats on starting the blog!

Is there an RSS feed we can subscribe to?

Also, in the future it would be nice to be able to subscribe to posts, so that commenters get notified about new replies. If possible :)

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

      Hi Stefan!

Simply try to subscribe to http://www.sbsh.net or blog.sbsh.net. You should find a new RSS option to our blog :)

As for comment email notifications – I’m already getting those, but I’m not sure whether this is because I’m defined as an admin and whether regular users are getting email notifications for comments too.

Have you received any email notification about my reply here?

  12. Beutelbär

Subscribing wasn´t possible – or better – no articles in the channels: http://www.sbsh.net or blog.sbsh.net.

    Any ideas?

    BB

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

Hmm.. what RSS app are you using to track feeds?

BTW – I see you are not logged in to the account :/ (the avatar is missing), is there trouble with the login as before?

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

Just to add – I’m really sorry for the trouble with the initial setup. Since we are only getting started with the blog things will of course get easier and work more smoothly in the upcoming days :)

(and a first official application announcement will be posted here this Monday.. ;] )

  13. yegorack

    Very good!

  14. GreatDay

No grass grows under your feet. Congratulations on yet another SBSH advance. Let the games begin!

  15. djblois

I would also suggest pulling all the old blog entries into here if it is not too much work. So that a user can go to one place to see both old and new blog entries.

    • Amit Regev, SBSH Software

Hi Daniel. Well, we tried to do, and you can see the first PhoneWeaver release discussion that we tried to import from our forums to the new blog, but the problem is that doing this takes A LOT of time since it has to be done manually I’m afraid… :/

So, eventually we decided we’ll give up on filling our forums with older content from the forums – and instead focus on bringing much more new releases for our applications and new applications :)

We’ve already posted a new Calendar Pro for BlackBerry at the start of this week, and, a new release will be posted here in two days – this time something for our Android users – so I hope that in no time, our new blog will be full of great content and new releases!
